I’m a designer and typographer, and have been involved in teaching graphic design and related subjects at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge since 1993. Prior to that I worked in London for about 17 years as a freelance illustrator, designer, typographer and design consultant. My personal and professional practice, research, and much of my teaching, centres upon typography, letters, and the visual form of language. This has informed my exhibited visual work, design projects, and academic research in the form of conference papers, books, exhibitions, events and collaborative projects. I am the author of The Complete Typographer (3rd Edn) Thames and Hudson 2010, and co-author of Art and Text (Black Dog 2009) and contributed to Font, the sourcebook (Black Dog 2008) and the Phaidon Compendium of Graphic Design. I teach on the BA Graphic Design and also contribute to teaching on the BA Illustration, MA Children’s Book Illustration, MA Printmaking and MA Publishing, and will head a new MA programme in Graphic Design and Typography for a first intake in 2012. My prints have been exhibited at the Plus Design festival, Birmingham 2007, Clare Hall Gallery, Cambridge 2009, and Ruskin Gallery, Cambridge 2010, and published in Ultrabold (UK) and The New Handmade Graphics (Rotovision 2010).
